When water leaves the treatment works it is pumped to sealed storage reservoirs, on the tops of hills. Our water distribution system, consisting of a large network of more than 3,000 km of water pipes, then takes this water from the storage reservoirs to customers homes and businesses.
Big water mains leaving treatment works can be as large as 900 mm (36 inches), while the pipes in the road range in size from 100mm to 600mm (4in - 24in). The pipe from the main in the road to your house is usually only 15 -22mm (0.5in -1in) in diameter.
