Friday 5 August
The re-opening of Stone Place and Longfellow Road has been delayed due to unexpected complications involving an underground culvert. To ensure the new main is laid at a sufficient depth to prevent damage to the road structure and also to meet water main installation requirements we have had to excavate underneath the culvert.

These extra measures relating to the culvert have resulted in our progress being slower than expected. However, our worksite is advancing along Central Road, and Stone Place and Longfellow Road should be reopened and back to normal usage by early next week.

  • Despite the culvert complications, Lynwood Drive was re-opened to vehicles on Wednesday 3 August.

  • Stone Place and Longfellow Road are expected to be re-opened on Tuesday 9 August.

  • The next phase of work will involve the closure to vehicles of the Caldbeck Avenue - Central Road junction. This closure is planned to start on 9 August and last for approximately one week. Warning and rerouting signs will be displayed locally.

Friday 29 July
Work began on the first stage of this vital improvement scheme on Monday 25 July on the south side of Central Road.

Following the junction closures of Lynwood Drive, Longfellow Road and Stone Place, approximately 80 metres of water main has been installed. Progress is on schedule but has been slightly hampered due to a larger than expected culvert running parallel to our proposed line of excavation. This meant that a portion of trench had to be diverted to compensate. Reinstatement is being carried out as we progress, allowing time for hardening. It is expected that Lynwood Drive will be re-opened early next week, with subsequent re-openings of Longfellow Road and Stone Place later in the week when sufficient distance of our works from the junctions is achieved.

  • Lynwood Drive anticipated re-opening, Wednesday 3 August.

  • Stone Place and Longfellow Road, anticipated re-opening Thursday 4 /Friday 5 August.

  • As our work progresses along Central Road, the next planned junction closure will be Caldbeck Avenue. Closure details and traffic re-routing will be advised locally in advance.

Friday 22 July
Work will start on the first stage of this vital improvement scheme on Monday, 25 July. It will begin on the south side of Central Road from the junction of Lynwood Drive to the junction of Stone Place.. Please note:

  • The junctions of Lynwood Drive, Longfellow Road and Stone Place will be closed for vehicle access to Central Road for approximately one week.

  • Longfellow Road, currently one-way, will allow two-way traffic, with parking suspended to facilitate vehicle passing places.

  • Access to Waitrose will be maintained via Windsor Road.

This essential work will replace ageing water mains in a 500-metre stretch of the A2043 in Central Road, Worcester Park. Four-inch cast iron mains will be replaced with 125mm (five-inch) high performance polyethylene mains, and supply connections will be renewed to Central Road properties.

Traffic management and alternative local re-routing, agreed with the highways authority (the London Borough of Sutton), will be required throughout the project as work progresses along Central Road from Lynwood Drive to Balmoral Road.

We are starting work on Monday, 25 July to optimise the school holiday period, when roads are less busy.

Temporary traffic lights will maintain traffic flow in Central Road. The short-term closure of individual Central Road junctions to through traffic will be necessary as work progresses.

Junctions affected - Lynwood Drive, Longfellow Road, Caldbeck Avenue, Washington Road, Brinkley Avenue, St. Philips Avenue, Stone Place, Windsor Road and Balmoral Road - will be closed and re-opened as required during the project.

Signed diversion routes will be put in place and access for local residents and emergency services will be maintained throughout. Local residents, businesses, schools and other organizations who or which will be directly affected have been informed.

We recognise this is a busy area and we will make every effort to minimise any inconvenience. Work will be carried out Monday to Friday with extended working hours with agreement with the London Borough of Sutton.

Weekly updates about progress and planned activities will be logged on this page. Links to press releases are below.
